combine digitally altered photographs with source code text from various sources. These works are both poetic evocations of the possibilities of text and image collage in the 21st century, and explorations of the hermetic side of the current technological revolution. The avebury series and untitled (temp path), among other works, use source code from the my doom or other viruses. Selecting bits of commands from the code and presenting them in a new context, enables the words to take on new connotations in combination with the images. Often, arbitrary terms outside of the programming language, used by the viruss anonymous writer, are chosen, to emphasize the paradox between the creative and destructive potential of computer viruses. Biennale.py utilises a 'harmless' computer virus developed by the new media collective www.0100101110101101.org for the 2001 Venice Biennale. The virus source code is collaged oover an altered photograph of the island of St. Michele in Venice. The weather prediction series combines algorithms used in developing software for weather forecasting. These are placed on photographs of cloud formations, which have been altered, by use of other algorithms, to appear as paintings. |
